OUR MISSION: Through the engagement with and performance of Shakespeare’s text using a unique artistic methodology, we create matchless and transformative experiences that empower audiences of all ages to expand and challenge their worldview.

12 night land 3Individual donors, like you, are the cornerstone of what makes the work of The Philadelphia Shakespeare Theatre possible. Your contributions support The Open Door Project, which offers students from the Philadelphia School District and the Delaware Valley an introduction to the transformative works of Shakespeare through exceptional educational programming and curriculum. Through our educational outreach programs we provide engagement. We specialize in those kids who sit in the back row, heads down, iPhones in hand, resolutely blocking out their teacher, the school, their fellow students. We get them on their feet in front of the class, script in hand.

Our students come from different neighborhoods, different homes and different challenges, but they are all exactly equal in this respect: they are teenagers. They have a deep seated need to find their own voice; to find stories that mirror and validate their own experience; to learn a vocabulary to comprehend their own hopes and fears; to find a way to engage positively with their community and the world at large.

Through The Open Door Project we strive to give them these tools, to help them answer these questions. But we cannot do it alone. With your help we can continue to bring the profound works of William Shakespeare to every student in our region.  Be a part of the new chapter in our Theatre’s story, please donate today.

open_door_logoThe Open Door Project consists of our in-classroom residency programs led by professional teaching artists who are experts in both the art of theatre and in Shakespeare’s plays. Shakespeare is the only author cited by name in the National Common Core Standards, making it critical that all students be afforded the opportunity to engage with his works on a deep level. Through our innovative, performance-based curriculum aligned with PA and National Common Core Standards, our professional teaching artists engage students in a rigorous week-long course of Shakespeare study. At the end of the program students are given the opportunity to perform one of Shakespeare’s famous scenes for their peers at the school.

In 2018, in addition to continuing our classroom residency programs, we will bring a professional tour of Macbeth to schools across the Greater Philadelphia region and beyond. This 90-minute version of one of the greatest tragedies the world has ever known is performed by six professional actors and followed by a post-performance discussion. Additionally, each student receives an educational study guide meticulously developed by our Artistic Director and Education Director.

The average cost to reach each student for these transformational programs is $55 per student, but in order to keep our programming accessible we charge only $10 per student.

Donors like you help us to bridge this gap and continue to provide our programs at reduced costs. The more students we reach the more sustainable our programs become.

Your support is instrumental. We know that art works. Please give generously to The Open Door Project and help us transform the lives of our young people through Shakespeare.
