Acting Shakespeare demands solid techniques to create the emotional,
psychological, physical and imaginative life of the character. Plays
written in verse require the actor to make strong choices that are based
on the text.
Particular emphasis will be placed on the way in which
Shakespeare's characters reveal themselves not only through action, but
also through the moment-by-moment shaping of the language -
word-by-word, image by image. Actors will discover how to mine the text
for clues to complex characters and relationships. Through these
sessions actors will also work on monologues with the goal of developing
material for classical auditions.
Session Topics:
Introduction
- This session will introduce students an overview of Shakespeare’s
text and language as well as exercises. Students will also discover what
Shakespeare
demands from the actor. There will also be an introduction to structure, scansion, and meter.
Structure, Scansion, and Meter - Students will explore this on a deeper level.
Music of the Text - A focus on assonance, alliteration,
onomatopoeia, and rhymes.
Monologue Session I - Exercises in Shakespeare monologues will be taught in this session.
Quality - This session focuses on owning and confronting
various words, thoughts, and imagery in the text.
Monologue Session II - The last session will focus on employing all of your techniques for a final monologue.
Requirements: Must be 18 years or older. No previous training is
required. Actors must be able to commit to all six sessions for the full
three hours in order to benefit from the training.
Instructor: Rosey Hay is
the Artistic Director of New York-based REV Theatre Company. She has
directed numerous Shakespeare plays including Hamlet, Othello and A
Midsummer Night’s Dream (all for Goodwill Theatre, NY). She is the
director and co-creator of The Witch of Edmonton. She was also the
Assistant Director for The Royal Shakespeare Company’s Romeo and Juliet
and The Winter’s Tale. She has taught and directed at The Juilliard
School, Graduate Acting Program at NYU, Stella Adler Conservatory,
American Academy of Dramatic Arts, Central School of Speech & Drama,
London, and most recently at Philadelphia’s University of the Arts.

Classes for Intermediate Actors
At The Philadelphia Shakespeare Theatre

This intermediate class is designed to meet the needs of students who have taken the Foundation course or who have prior training and knowledge of Shakespeare.
Students will delve into every aspect of making Shakespeare's language come alive for both actors and the audience. This process gives actors the opportunity to develop and build on their skills and technique. The focus on this course will be to explore more deeply text analysis and character development through work on both monologues and scene work.
One unique aspect of this course is shared text- Inspired by Patsy Rodenburg, who is one of the world’s leading voice and text teachers: she suggests that actors learn a new speech or poem once a week in order to encounter the text and find the discipline to share this with fellow students weekly. Out of age range and cross gender material is encouraged.
Through a fuller understanding of the structure and meaning of the thoughts the language will come alive, and the dynamics of Shakespeare’s text – rhythm, energy, sound, meaning and meter – will be closely examined through exercises, monologues and scene work. Particular emphasis will be placed on the way in which Shakespeare’s characters reveal themselves not only through action, but through moment by moment shaping of language – word to word and image to image.

You don’t have to be a seasoned swordsman to become an action hero. Join us for our Stage Combat course and learn to fight your way across the stage! This class takes a unique look at Shakespeare’s text through sword fighting and hand combat, teaching students how to safely engage in both armed and unarmed combat onstage. By learning the basics of Shakespeare acting through unarmed
combat and swordplay, students will bring the greatest kings, clowns,
and cowards to life.
Instructor: Michael Cosenza has
been working with The Philadelphia Shakespeare Theatre since 2006 as
both an Actor and a Fight Director. This season he is working as the
fight director, and has choreographed fights for Hamlet, As You Like It, Macbeth, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Comedy of Errors,
and all of the educational tours. He has acted with multiple companies
in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware. He holds the rank of Advanced
Actor Combatant with the Society of American Fight Directors, and in
2010 won the Best Male Advanced Combatant at the National Stage Combat
Workshop. He has taught stage combat at Arcadia University, Lehigh
University, LaSalle, Drexel University, and his alma mater, Temple
University. He continues to work with programs at the Actor’s Center of
Philadelphia, and choreograph many productions in the Philadelphia area.

Overview
The Classical Acting Academy was developed to
serve professional actors who want an immersion experience in classical
acting techniques and performance. Over a period of eight weeks, actors
work with a seasoned director, text and acting coaches and a combat
director in a professional setting, allowing them the unique
opportunity to be with professionals who are working in the field.
Actors have the chance to be considered for the mainstage spring
productions.
