Camp Shakespeare

Camp Shakespeare will run over the course of two weeks in July from 9:00am to 4:00pm. Students will take a variety of courses each day and present a showcase on the final day of camp for parents, teachers, family, and friends! In our Shakespeare camp, students develop their talents, deepen their understanding of Shakespeare’s language, and build confidence through performance. Guided by professional actors from The Philadelphia Shakespeare Theatre, teens explore and study classical acting techniques, text, voice, stage combat, and improvisation.

The camp fosters collaboration and creativity, skills put to use in a culminating performance for family and friends. Students will have a one of a kind experience this summer as we explore two of Shakespeare’s most renowned and loved plays: Hamlet and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Hamlet’s journey is the most revered in English literature. We watch as he evolves from a student, betrayed and alone, a victim of circumstance, to a prince, ready to take action against the evil that surrounds him. In A Midsummer Night’s Dream, first love and its accompanying highs and lows are deeply felt by Shakespeare’s cast of motley characters. Set in a magical forest, fairies, sprites, and enchantments make already befuddled characters even more confused but, ultimately, teach that, “ the course of true love never did run smooth.”

Our camp teaches students not only how to read Shakespeare, but how to perform Shakespeare. Being able to engage with Shakespeare’s text and characters through performance turns the study of him from an academic exercise to an invigorating and visceral experience. The fun and excitement experienced in camp will foster a love of Shakespeare that will see students through the rest of their education and the rest of their lives.
