Celebrating their triumphant return from war, a group of hardened soldiers' thoughts melt into those of love in this "merry war" between the sexes. A new sort of truth telling occurs; rather than attempting to destroy their enemies, the secrets revealed in this uproarious comedy will prove who our heroes' true friends are. Sharp-tongued and disillusioned Benedick and Beatrice must undeceive themselves to see each other clearly, while a series of mix-ups will challenge the young lovers Claudio and Hero to follow through with their marriage. Even Don John, the would-be Iago, is rendered gentle by the soft power of Messina and its inhabitants. Throughout the play, these beloved characters must learn to forget their troubled past and remind themselves that "man is a giddy thing."
