FESTIVAL HISTORY
The Philadelphia Shakespeare Festival was founded as The Red Heel Theatre in 1989, initially focusing on classic works of English theatre. In 1993, Carmen Khan became the Artistic Director of Red Heel and in 1996 focused the company’s efforts on the works of Shakespeare, renaming it The Philadelphia Shakespeare Festival.
Artistic Excellence. Now in its eleventh season, The Philadelphia Shakespeare Festival has grown to become one of the region's cultural cornerstones. The Festival's mainstage production season runs March through May with over 60 high-quality performances, and attracting some of the most talented actors and designers in the area. Known for its clarity, emotional depth and relevance, the company's productions have attained both audience and critical acclaim.
Unsurpassed Educational Programming. In 2000, The Festival launched The Open Door Project, a comprehensive arts-in-education program. Endorsed by the Philadelphia Board of Education, the Moorestown (NJ) Board of Education and the Philadelphia Arts in Education Program, The Open Door Project reaches nearly 5,000 students each season through its student-only matinees, in-school residencies and other community-oriented partnerships.
